J. L. Bhattacharya Professor and Head Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Prior to joining MEC, J.L.Bhattacharya worked for over 32 years at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. in the Corparate R&D Division, Hyderabad, from where he superannuated in year 2012 as an Additional General Manager. He was involved in research related electrical rotating machines, power systems, controls and power electronics. He was also involved in research related to superconducting machines. Thereafter, he worked as a Professor in Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology for two years before joining MEC in 2014.

His current teaching and research interests are:
a) Teaching: Machine Modeling, Design of Electrical Machines, Reliability of Power Systems and Electronics.
b) Research Interests: Superconducting Machines, Cryogenics, Traction motor design, Power Electronics and Controls, Electro Magnetic Fields, Power Systems, Microgrid/ Smartgrid, Electric Vehicles.

    Superconducting Machines

    • 200 kW liquid helium cooled superconducting generator, in year 1995;
    • 5MW liquid helium cooled superconducting generator, in year 2001;
    • 1 MVA, 33/6.6 kV, liquid nitrogen cooled superconducting transformer, year 2008;
    • 200 kW, helium gas cooled superconducting motor, in year 2010.

    Traction motors and generators

    • 300 kW AC traction motors and systems for AC EMU operated by Indian Railways.
    • 500 kW AC traction motors for Diesel Electric Engines of Railways.
    • 3600 kW generators for Diesel Electric Engines of Railways.

    Brushless exciter machines and systems

    • 90 kW Brushless Excitation System for synchronous motors and industrial generators.
    • 250 kW Brushless Excitation Systems for Hydrogenerators up to 25 MW.
    • 500 kW Brushless Excitation Systems for Hydrogenerators up to 60 MW.

    Power systems and controls

    • Protection of synchronous motors against out of step operation.
    • Fault clearance on large turbogenerators of capacity 500 & 660 MW.
    • Frequency response characteristics of turbogenerators of capacity 500 & 660 MW.
    • Faults leading to asynchronous operation of 500 MW and 250 MW turbogenerators.
    • Operation of gas turbine driven industrial turbogenerators as motors for starting duty of the gas turbines of capacity up to 60 MW.

    • Recipient of Commonwealth Scholarship award for carrying out research in New Zealand.
    • Twice recipient of G.T.Murray award of IPENZ Auckland New Zealand for research in micro hydro systems.
